The costs depends on how much the husband and wife want to fight over children, property, and financial assets. Many Americans do not have 'tens of thousands of dollars' to pay lawyers. In many cases, only one spouse has a lawyer, usually the spouse who initiated the divorce proceedings. The lawyer drafts a proposal and submits it to the others spouse. There may be some hagglings over small points, then the paper is signed. When my parents divorced, my Mom hired a lawyer to write a divorce agreement, my Dad read it, understood it, and then signed it. I do not know the final cost and I doubt my Mom would give me details about the legal fees.

Another point is that many divorces take two or more years to be finalized. My parents were separated for 2 and 1/2 years before the divorce was finalized.
