The Spiegel has published an article on this, which happens to be my own opinion as well. Unfortunately, the machine translation is more funny than understandable.

In short: They say Harry is just a spoiled party kid and he was already known as that before. The really shocking thing is that his whole generation is alarmingly uninformed about the Nazi time, particularly the atrocities against the Jews, and also alarmingly uninterested and uncaring. They say that though in the British TV there are really many documentations series about the time of the war, they focus mainly on how the British triumphed over Germany, not on issues like Auschwitz and not on the fact that Germany has changed pretty much. They still believe that under a think coat of civilizedness, all Germans ("Krauts") are Nazi. Therefore, in the media, Germany is also very welcome as the "whipping boy" of the British nation.

The article also questions the morality of the unknown party attendant who photographed Harry, and instead of challenging him about the problem, silently sold the photo probably for much money to the media, and the morality of the other party guests, who continued to celebrate as if nothing happened.

The real scandalous thing is the behaviour of ALL these rich "in-crowds", the yellow press, and the unpolitical, uninformed and uncaring youth. Harry is just a scapegoat, and it is hypocritical to point only on him. He is a victim of his own being a VIP, just as his mother, unable to cope with it.

And yes, the monarchy should be dumped.
