What has happened is that in a large part of Islam tradition has become a large part of authority. In the Shiite community amonst whom I am currently living the word of the iman is the authority. Look at the following that Sadr has in Iraq. Where ever there are high rates of illiteracy, or an education deficiency people follow the strong man. You need to live here to understand it.
But you are right there is a high level of freedom in Bahrain. Some people think there is too much.
