There are two much better alternatives to Ethonal based fuels. The first and most likely is Electric power. Electric cars (and electric hybrid cars) are extremely efficient. They cost about 88 cents per full charge (which lasts about 80 miles worth of driving, and are ideal for stop and go driving, because power is regenerated during breaking, and no power is wasted, as the engine doesn't have to idle. Teh downsides are that 80 miles is nothing compared to the 300 miles you can travel on a full tank of gas (though cost-wise 80 miles is about half as expencive. The other problem is that poeple don't want to drive soemthign with less than 120 horsepower. Damn, I only have the equivilant of ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY HORSES pulling my vehicle... I feel so inadiquate. The distance thing: chargers are available now, and being installed at various public places, that will give a full charge in half an hour for free. FOR FREE. A FREE tank of 'gas'. There are a couple up in atlanta already, that's all I know of.

So, 30 bucks a week to drive around town, or 6 bucks a week?
Many moving parts and fluids and repair bills, or one moving part that's easy to replace?
A loud ass car or a silent car?
A car that costs 22 thousand dollars or one that costs 8 thousand (if built yourself).

People sure can be stupid.

The other option is fuel-cells. These combine hydrogen (sometimes from ethonol, in fact, but usually from H2 gas) and oxygen to form water, and the energy released from the reaction is harnessed and converted to electric power via generator. This is more efficient than batteries (and even cleaner). Unfortunately, theres about a 50/50 chance that a large bump in the road will cause you to be blown sky high.

That sucks, but they're workign on it :)
