Subject: A note of explanation for TEACHERS (this is NIE and this is dumping)
In reply to: Kriss Johnson 's message, "Re: NIE is FUN!" on 19:20:40 08/21/04 Sat

Hello Teachers! This is a special note of explanation for some of you.

In case you do not know, the term NIE or Newspapers In Education is a 40-year-old cocept in which newspapers sponsor a person or an entire department to help schools. They provide free and low cost newpapers in classroom bundles that often are free to teachers. Sponsors such as businessese in your area or individuals pay the cost to make this happen because they believe in the idea that reading the newspaper can help students learn in many subject areas. You'll hear about NIE often on this site. Many of the suggestions here come from newspaper educationa professionals, many of whom are former classroom teachers.

(Nice, to see you here, Kriss!) And yes, I guess it's ok to say dammit -- since you just did anyway.)

Kriss is talking about dumping, a practice in which newspapers give away many more newspapers to schools than are useful and don't bother to back them up with solid educational materials just to make their overall circulatoin numbers look good. It's a self-destructive practice though, because you just keep pushing more and more newspapers out the door in fututre years to meet increased circulatoin goals and over the past few years has been responsible for the future of several great NIE veterans, who refused to play the dumping game.
