Subject: A cool idea from Alabama

David,
I have attached information about our Law Day program. We have implemented
the program for the past 3 years and follow the American Bar Association
theme. Teachers, students and volunteer lawyers love getting together for
Law Day and we like have $3,500 extra dollars to complete it. Let me know if
you have any questions.

Law Day is an annual event established by the American Bar Association (ABA) in 1957.
*“Law Day, May 1st, is a special day focusing on our heritage of liberty under law, a national day of celebration officially designated by joint resolution of Congress in 1961. Every year, the ABA is joined by national organizations, state and local bars, businesses, and schools, in conducting thousands of programs on the rule of law in a constitutional democracy.” The Birmingham News Newspaper in Education program decided to promote the celebration and expose our students to the law and legal professionals in our community.

The Birmingham News Newspaper in Education Law Day was designed to provide entertaining and educational learner based lessons for the Middle and High School classroom. NIE developed a five-day curriculum study that provided informative, current legal issues appropriate to the learning level of the designated students. The study began Friday, April 25 and culminated on May 1 when more than 90 attorneys visited 51 classrooms around Birmingham and the Jefferson County area to celebrate Law Day and answer student questions. This is our second year to implement a Law Day program and we more than double the number of participants from last year.

Our goals are as follows
1. Provide relevant law curriculum to teachers participating in the Birmingham News Newspaper in Education program. Over 150 teachers signed up to be a part of the program: 54 Birmingham area teachers and 100 teachers outside the metropolitan area.
2. To pay for the production of the curriculum guides, all newspapers utilized for the program and all corresponding materials. Two law firms donated $1,000 and two other firms and a law association donated $500 each for a total of $3,500.
3. Recruit volunteer lawyers to visit all participating Birmingham area classrooms and serve as speakers for the culmination of the study – May 1, 2003. Participation by teachers, student and attorneys doubled 2002 participation.
