If the chewing / scratching noise is mild, it probably is a mouse. Sometimes squirrels and birds get stuck down in a wall or even the possibility that it is a raccoon or raccoon and her pups. All of these animals can get down into a wall void. If you determine it is a mouse, I would leave it alone. Its not uncommon for mice to die in the wall and it won't be the first at your house either. If it sounds like it could be more than a mouse, have someone with a fiber optic scope check it out. We have scopes that require less than a half inch hole be drilled to insert the fiber optic scope. Call around and be sure to ask if they have this equipment as most wildlife removal companies don't carry these scopes.
