For three decades "Revolver" had been greatly overlooked sandwhiched between "Rubber Soul" and "Sgt. Pepper" but the Beatles seventh release is every bit as profound as either of the two. As an album it is perfection. Nothing here is missed. The Beatles no longer want to hold your hand but to take your wrist and lead you into a strange world previously unexplored.
Note that it opens with a count in the same way their first album does, but not in a 'live' sense, but in a studio setting indicating to the listener that things are about to change.
In this sequence they complain of their tax burdon, sympathize with the meaninglessness of life, express a desire to relax, expand consciousness to life and beyond, the need to be a part of someone else, the joy of childhood, life-death conciousness, acknowledgement of a sunny day, greed and possesion, the end of relationship, an invitation to exploring the inner self, the frustrations of love, the expression of love, finally the universal love and stream of subconsciousness. A megalithic departure from "Gee, Wally, that Eddie is a real wise guy."
After listening to "Revolver" one wonders "What the hell just happened to me?"
