What is the REAL reason, I wonder, that Apple refuses to release the first four Beatles British albums in stereo on CD?
Sometimes one just have to wonder what in the hell are they doing there at Apple. Now the anthology trio was a fantastic package. True some things were left off and it seemed on the first one they werent sure in the beginning if they wanted it to be like a radio program or collection of songs, but the end result is a valuable compilation that the Beatlemaniac can not live without and the casual listener shouldnt.
Since then, however, Apple refuses to release "Let It Be" film, in fact several years ago all existant copies were recalled. Is it because it shows what a self centered prick Paul really is? Yet they release the "Naked" album. Just what we need, more versions of the Beatles most overrated, overexamined, easily accessable bootleg. Face it Paul, its not "Sgt. Pepper." Its not even "Beatles 65".
If that wasnt enough of a slap at Beatles fans, they then release, with great fanfare, the first four American albums with a pricetag thats very unBeatleish. billed as "huge demand." C'mon, American fans were ripped off in the first place in the sixties. Lots of American fans sought out the British releases for their higher quality and more songs in the beginning.
If Apple wants to meet the huge demand they will release the first four British albums in stereo. George Martin claimed that he wanted to stay within authenticity. He said the first four were never intended for release in stereo. I have heard that the real reason is because George Martin was under pressure and didnt have time to mess with mastering the stereo tapes. I also wonder why songs on "Past Masters", "Penny Lane" and "Baby Youre A Rich Man" were released in stereo since there had never been stereo versions of those songs.
Not only are they good representations of early stereo, They are legondary in their defined left-right channel splits. How many musicians have learned the harmonies or the lead guitar by turning off the other channel?
Come on Apple. Stop acting like Derek Taylor is still running things. Start making sense and release the first four in stereo!
