Jerry Spinelli: 218 pages Rating:***1/2

Loser by Jerry Spinelli is a fictional story about a boy named Donald Zinkoff and his journey from first to sixth grade. I liked this book because it teaches you to understand and respect others' differences. The author shows this through the main character, Donald, who is not very smart or athletic. For example, in the classroom he raises his hand to answer all the questions that the teachers ask. He gets all of them wrong, which just makes him more determined to keep trying to answer. Also on the soccer field in second grade he celebrates after his team loses by screaming and jumping up and down. He was completely unaware of the final score. Because of these and other incidents in the book all the kids call him "loser" behind his back. At the end of the book something happens to change their minds about Donald. Read to find out how a "loser" can gain the friendship and respect of others. I gave it only 3 and 1/2 stars because there was not as much action as there is in a fantasy or sports book, my favorite genre.
