May I suggest that Ed is an exploration of the individual and its relationship with society. Ed reminds me of a 60's show called " The Prisoner"..to this day there is a few websites devoted to it and a international fan club. Both are very surrealistic. Nothing in the bowling alley or with the highschoolers is even closely attached to reality..maybe Phil is a tribute to Fellini. The goings on by the support cast always parrallel what is going on between Ed and Carol. The first few minutes of everyshow is a metaphor for what is being explored..Ed is art. Tv at its best. Ed is Lettermans's gift to the industry that made him a billionaire. The base ,,starting point of Letterman and crew is that like Melville and the Romantics..hows that for a name of a band?..anyway..one must progress, explore, jump in the vat and stomp the grapes, inorder to find yourself, your limits and talents..Ed is a metaphor of that exploration. Did you catch the tribute to Melville in Doc Mikes tribute to the Arts ( entertaining wife and Molly while Ed and Carol "discussed") ?...How many episodes ended with Ed thinking things over?..how about that! a commercial TV show that encourages the viewer to think about what you just saw!..Everything you see and hear while watching that show is put there by the producers and writers and actors. When it doesn't make sense , try a different perspective to understand it...enjoy!...........MEL
