教宗本篤十六世毫無意外地終於發表了上任以來第一次反同志婚姻的談話。他不斷重複強調婚姻乃一男一女的結合，還把同志結合稱作「偽婚姻」(pseudo-matrimony)。

他是在聖約翰拉特蘭教堂(St. John Lateran basilica)向羅馬主教團講述婚姻弁鉈氶A發表前述言論。「今日婚姻各種形式的解體，比如像自由結合(free unions)、試婚以及同性別人士的偽婚姻，是無政府自由主義的表現，這種自由錯誤地取代了人類的真自由。」他沒有解釋什麼是真自由，只是補充說，「自由的極致表現不是尋歡。」

教宗的講稿長達14頁，裡面同時還譴責了離婚、人工避孕和墮胎。婚姻就教宗的觀點看來，不是隨著時代而改變之「隨意的社會結構」，而是根植於人類最深奧本質的(the most profound essence of the human being)制度。他認為瀰漫於當今社會的「相對主義」觀，不把任何事視為絕對的態度，是道德教育的一大絆腳石。

義大利最大同志權利團體Arcigay的會長曼庫索(Aurelio Mancuso)，透過路透社發表聲明，抨擊教宗裝傻，因為同志結合根本影響不到異性戀婚姻。
