Subject: Had to share

Just had to share an experience I just had over the last few days. I received a chocolate phase black bear a few weeks ago and it was skinned with the feet and skull still in. I was going to send it to a tannery but have been playing with Krowtann for smallar mammals over the last few month and decided what the heck I'll give it a go. This is a bear for my personal collection so I figured if it doesn't work oh well. Now I also only do taxidermy as a hobby and do not sell any of my work (my wife says that's goinna change) ..LOL. Anyway I wanted to put Krowtann to the test so I took a scalpel and a skinning knife and went to work, within 1/2 hour I had the skull out and the feet removed. I ONLY TOOK THE RED MEAT OFF left a lot of the fat on and didn't spend much time prepping it. I put the bear in a mixture of Stop Rot and degreaser for an hour and then rinced. I mixed up the Krowtann through the bear in and returned to it daily to re-position. I left it in the solution for 5 days. Today I took it out, neutralized it and washed it in tide, then let it hang for a couple hours. I just got done thinning it with a wire wheel on a grinder and it looks great, all the hair is tight, good stretch, no odor and the flesh side is white as a ghost. Anyway just wanted to share my experience with Krowtann and the most "basic" tools to tan a bear .. it can be done!!
