If I may... I think the word that best decribes what was being discussed is "INDIFFERENCE." And I'm not just talking about indifference towards international incidents that are so far removed from our own little spheres of influence as to be ignored or dismissed. I'm also gesturing franically towards any or all of the following: road rage, the death penalty, date rape drugs, etc, etc, etc, etc... Take your pick folks; think about it and totally IGNORE me if you can honestly say that each time you hear about any of these or a plethora of other topics that you are totally rapt.

I think Allison's point is that if it doesn't infringe on our little world, we 'don't get involved.' I know I'm guilty as charged... The magnitude of this tragedy DID catch everyone's attention; hell, it DEMANDED it. If anyone thinks this tragedy will not (and in most cases already has) affect them, they are sadly mistaken. It is a shame that it takes this magnitude to move people to action, but the good sign is that it HAS.

My fear is that two weeks from now, when everyone has seen that airliner going into the side of the tower a hundred times, this nation will not still be OUTRAGED. Our freedoms, as we know them, will never be the same. Our nation, as we know it, must become exponentially more vigilant, and yes, cynical. The children and young people of today must learn a vigilance that our generation never did. Our parents and grandparents experienced something akin to this during the attack on Pearl Harbor. We never had to because they were wary...

Irrespective of the course of action that Bush, the Cabinet and Congress decide to take, it must be unquestionably supported. It doesn't matter what the magnitude of response is, there will be those who think it is not enough and others who believe it is too much. Too bad, this crisis is EXACTLY why we elect a President; to make a decision none of us would want to....

Another point and I'll step down from this soapbox. I said in a previous post that I wanted a mushroom cloud. Let me expound, I still do; quite simply put, our response must be EXPONENTIALLY more severe than this attack for one simple reason: Deterence. We knew who attacked our embassies in Kenya, we knew who was responsible for the attack on the USS Cole and we will soon prove who did this. We have to make the consequences of such an act so extreme as to make those who would consider these acts wonder if they should, weigh the consequenses and then decide to try another line of work...
