Good question. I bet it is like everything, all in the eye of the beholder. I have, indeed, bought things a bit too shabby for my mother's tastes, or my son's... or anyone else.. One thing I remember and cherish is an old old alphabet teacup. The original version must have been spectacular because it is still awesome, I think.. However, it has been broken in several pieces and mended with glue that has turned a lovely shade of mocha to match the crazing and tea stains inside... The gilded letters are fadey and spectacular in their upper case shabby ornateness... and I will never forget buying that cup at an auction I stopped to watch on a whimsy.. A perfectly age-lined, 82 year old woman came gliding over to me wearing a blue and pink rose shawl (which I also coveted!) She said, "That was MY cup. My mother 'learned' me my ABC's with that cup over my oatmeal." I handed it to her to have, but she laughed and said... "I know 'em now." She smiled and said to my wide-open eyes: "I'm glad YOU bought it." as if we were friends... but I saw her only that one time... except I do see her every time I look at that "shabby as shabby can be" cup. Good morning, dear new friends...
