Subject: Phimosis - can I have some advice please

Dear Dr. Stuart,

I am a 21-year-old male and I'm sure I have full phimosis (looks very much like the first picture on your site). I've always has it, but I only realised that it wasn't right a couple of years ago. I was afraid to go to the doctor until very recently as I didn't want a circumcision to be recommended.

Last month, I finally went to see my doctor and as I feared, that was the advice he gave. When I suggested stretching and told him about the steroid creams available, it was clear that he wasn't disapproving of them; rather, he didn't realise that there were options other than circumcision.

I definitely don't want to go down the circumcision route, and my doctor asked me to find out what cream was recommended and let him know.

(As a side note, it may be worth pointing out that my mother took me to see the doctor at the time about my tight foreskin problem when I was about 3, and he recommended trying retraction when I was in the bath. My recollection of being that age is very hazy, but I think I tried a couple of times, but never continued. It might be that I found it too painful.)

Basically, then, what would you recommend for someone with the form of the condition that I have? Should I try stretching and betamethasone? Presumably my doctor (UK) will be able to prescribe it?

Thank you very much for any advice you can give me.

Jack
