Dan,

I can't answer your question. I am a Canadian who just applied to the UBC MAS program. Did you apply? If you called or emailed them at SLAIS at UBC, they should (I hope)know how easily their MAS grads are finding work in the US. I would appreciate knowing what you find out. I notice in quite a few American job ads that appear to be archives-related, they say "MLS required, with coursework in archival studies." So I am curious about the status of and views on the MAS degree in the US. Are there lots of MAS programs offerred in American universities?

thanks
Paul Washington

I am a graduate of SLAIS program. I know, this is something our MAS colleagues were concerned about. MAS is not recognized in the US under TN1 for a librarian/archivist jobs. However, SLAIS has a joint MLIS/MAS program. This is an option many students consider. I was also enrolled in the joint program but got a job and applied for MLIS graduation and moved to the US. I took a lot of courses from MAS program for which I got credits for my MLIS. If you are a Canadian and planning to work in the US, I would recommend you to go for thier joint program if you really want to stay in archival field.
