We can figure out the approximate dates of most of the songs from copyright registrations, and Jean's notes, but I was surprised that there was no info about them on the CD. Jean said he recorded three new songs in 2005, and I originally assumed she meant they were new songs that Dan wrote around that time. But in reading the Universal Music press release, it appears that she was including "Birds" as being one of the new songs he recorded. We know he didn't write that one, but I suppose we can still assume he wrote "Sometimes a Song" and "Come to the Harbor" in 2005 or maybe within a few years before that. Copyright dates don't necessarily determine when a song was written either, but at least they let us know the songs weren't written any later than the registration date. "Love in Time" was registered in 1983, the same year it was released on the Michael Brewer album. "Diamonds to Dust" was registered in 1988 and released on a Don Williams album in 1990. Alvin mentioned that he heard of Dan playing "Colors of Eve" at a California show about 20 years ago, so he may have written it around 1989. And it was registered in 1991 along with "A Growing Time". We've heard Dan play "Nature of the Game" over the years, the earliest I know of is 1985 which is also the same year it was registered. The two covers are from the late 60s. "Birds" was released in 1970, but there's a live recording of Neil playing it in 1968. And "Soft Voice" was released by Summerhill in 1969. So that leaves "So Many Changes" and "Days to Come". They're not listed in the copyright database, and I don't recall hearing anything about them before, so it's hard to say how old they might be. Before the press release was posted, I thought "So Many Changes" could be one of the new songs he recorded in 2005, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
