In reply to: Christine 's message, "Re: Jim Wilson's DF Tribute CD" on 02/22/10 3:37pm

I haven't heard the whole album yet, but based on the samples, I feel somewhat as Brianne does. But on the other hand, I'm not quite sure what I was expecting from it. I was excited when I first heard that Jim was working on a tribute album. I'd heard there were a number of guest artists involved also, but no specifics.

Then recently, when I saw the track list, I was a bit disappointed that the songs were mostly the usual suspects...the hits. Though now, when I think about it seriously, what would I want to hear? Did I really want to hear someone else doing my favorite Dan songs? I don't know... "Icarus Ascending" is one of my favorites....but really, I don't think anyone could do it justice. I'm not sure that any tribute album would satisfy. There's no substitute for Dan.

I do think Jim Wilson is talented, and this is his sincere, heartfelt tribute to Dan. It's his interpretation of Dan's music and what it meant to him. I'll buy it because he was Dan's friend, and because I appreciate the respect and admiration he had for Dan's music. It may be an album that will grow on me.

You can listen to samples of all the songs here: http://www.greenhillmusic.com/item/GHD5677_Leader+Of+The+Band

Thank you for the samples page! Some are very different than Dan's. I hear what Breanne means about missing Dan's spirit. I liked run for the roses best of all. I will get the CD because it is for Dan and hope it will grow on me too. The cover of the CD is pretty. I wonder if Jean took the photograph?

In case you didn't know, just thought I'd mention a few songs on Jim Wilson's previous albums that Dan contributed to, that you might like. On Cape of Good Hope there's a song called "Picasso's Midnight Stroll" which has very cool, kind of haunting, wordless vocals from Dan. On Jim's Christmas album Dan sings a beautiful version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". And the title song on Northern Seascape is a very pretty instrumental that Jim credits Dan with co-writing.

Would be a good time to buy Jim's albums since he's offering discounts on his site right now, or you could just buy the individual tracks at Amazon.
