I don't have any information on Gilbert Garland specifically, but do know that Crosskeys Rovers RFC were crowned Champions of the Western Valley League for the Season 1911-1912, the Season in which you believe Gilbert Garland played. Also, I believe that gold medals were issued to all team players at the time. I hope that this is of interest to you.

Regards

I have a Gilbert Garland in my tree, the son of William Garland and Lucy Hurn. He would be my 1st cousin x3 removed. At various times he lived in Llanarth St. Llanover St. and Risca Road.

Gilbert Garland was my great-grandfather, his parents were William Garland and Lucy Hurn. He married Elizabeth Batt and had three children - Percy, Iverna and Lucy. His last home was Grove Road (No. 4). His brother Stanley and his son Percy emigrated to the US before WWII. In 1939 he went over there to visit following the death of his wife Elizabeth that year. Sadly, he died on that visit and was buried in Michigan. I don't know a great deal about his rugby playing, but I do remember mention of caps when I was younger. He also played trombone in Crosskeys Silver Band - he is on the far left of the photo of the band shown on this site (1930s). If anyone has any further information about him - rugby, band or any other aspect of his life, please let me know.

Hi Paul. I can add a little bit to you mail.. Gilbert played for Wales 1912-1913. Also as it wasn't possible for the Uk family to attend his funeral in Michigan they were all sent photos of him in his coffin!.. Bay City Michigan was where my Mams Uncle Philip Jefferies ended up and well and died there in 1966. I think a lot of miners went over to the US to mine coal in the Pennsylvania areas. Must have been during the depression..
Percy 1905 - 1982 died Bay City Michigan
Iverna 1907 died 1992 LLanelli
Lucy 1908 - 1990

Which one are you related to?
Thanks for the reply
Kim

Hi Kim, I am Iverna's grandson. I have the photo of Gilbert in his coffin (although I tend not to keep it on display), along with cuttings from the US newspapers first about his visit, then his death. Gilbert is buried at Bay City.

Where did you find the info on playing for Wales? I have been trying to find out more for a long time.

Paul

Dear Paul. I would love to have a copy of the Photo and press cuttings. Genes reunited is where I get all my info from and of course our Mam is still alive and kicking at 83 and knows more about the past than what she had for lunch! Don't forget that Mams cousin Horace Jefferies has written books on Crosskeys Rugby and is living in Crosskeys still. He would be a mind of info.
Keep in touch please! Kim

Hello Kim, I'm related to the Garland family through my GGrandmother Florence, the daughter of Henry a brother of William Garland and uncle to Gilbert. Florence married Richard Albert Kear and had my Grandmother (Lena) Mary Kear who married Bryn Pritchard. They were living in Wattsville and Crosskeys.

Dear Walter, For many years I have been trying to find a Cissie Barrah that was mentioned in my Great Great Uncle Job Jefferies Will, She was his Niece but I have been unable to find a connection. Cissie might have been a pet name but do you have any info that might help? At the time of the Will dated 1931 Mrs Cissie Barrow(sic)? was living at 21 Tredegar Terrace Crosskeys. Hope you can help
Regards Kim
