Subject: Rhyd Fraith House

From the 1881 Census some of my ancestors lived at Rhydfraith House, in the parish of Machen. On the old maps (1885) it is shown near the Rock Colliery, under Coed Rhyd Fraith. Is this place still in existence? Does anyone have any information on it?

Unfortunately Rhydfraith no longer exists but it is still possible to walk along the footpath that your ancestors would have regularly used. The footpath still runs adjacent to the River Sirhowy and is now part of the Sirhowy Valley Country Park. In your ancestors time it lead to the village of Full Moon (also no longer exists).

I can only assume that Rhydfraith became disused before the 1900s with the rapid growth and development of the New Risca Pit (North Risca Blackvein Collieries) which was situated on the opposite side of the river. This monster stretched from the village of Wattsville to the village of Crosskeys and dumped vast quantities of waste across the valley floor between the two villages . When the valley floor was full the waste was then dumped on the top of the mountain.

Apparently Rhydfraith was a ruin in the 1930s.

Thank you very much for your reply and I'm so sorry for my slow response. I will take that walk to where you suggested.
Apparently my ancestor g-g-grandfather David Griffiths was employed at the Chemical works, which I believe later became Risca Brick Works.
Thanks again, John.

My ancestors also lived at Rhydfraith. The farm was destroyed by waste from the mine which prompted many in the family to emigrate to Australia and the US.
