PRESS RELEASE

Consultation On The Future Of Community Health Councils In Wales

Proposals to change the number of Community Health Councils (CHCs) across Wales and strengthen their role have been published by the Minister for Health and Social Services, Mrs Edwina Hart.

A consultation event to be led by representatives of the Welsh Assembly Government will be held at Greenmeadow Golf Club, Croesyceliog, Cwmbran on Friday 20th March at 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. Partners in the NHS, local government and the voluntary sector have been invited to attend and interested members of the public will be very welcome to attend to hear the case for change directly and have their say.

Although the number of Community Health Councils across Wales are proposed to reduce from 22 to 7, there will be no change locally with Gwent Community Health Council continuing to serve the five County Boroughs of Gwent.

“In many ways the Minister has adopted the Gwent model for Community Health Councils in Wales,” says Cathy O’Sullivan, Gwent Community Health Council’s Chief Officer, “but it would still mean a radical change to the way we work so we need to study these proposals carefully. As an independent health “watchdog”representing users of the NHS we would greatly value input from local people.

Interested members of the public and organisations have until 24th April 2009 to comment on the proposals. Gwent Community Health Council will be involving all its members in developing a full response.

Copies of the proposals will be available at the event on 20th March. It is also available on the Gwent CHC website – www.patienthelp.wales.nhs.uk/gwent

6th March 2009
