Subject: Happy Father's Day--and ugh, moving is such a pain!

First of all, Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! DaxDad and I are being taken to lunch by the boss & his wife-to-be after church today. I'm sure there's also a call for JillDad coming later today from Seattle. We'll make sure he has a fun day. :-) He's been working SO hard lately, he sure deserves it!

Have any of you done a cross-country move before? Or any kind of long distance move? Oh yeah, also add three geriatric pets to the move mix! Another fun little twist is having a house on the market at the same time, trying to keep it looking tidy while packing, and then leaving at a moment's notice (taking the dog) for the realtor to show the house to prospective buyers. That happened twice this week.

We're worn out already and our move date is still two weeks away! Seems like we have quite a bit of packing to do, but it's mostly stuff we're using on a daily basis, so we can't really pack it yet. We're having a big garage sale this weekend, and whatever doesn't sell will be donated or thrown away. It's "clean sweep" time!

The movers are loading us up Monday July 2, and we're hitting the road the next day with Lucia in the back seat for our 3800 mile road trip. I'm sure we'll be REALLY well rested before starting that week-long trip! :-P Dax & Melissa will be flying out a few weeks later, and bringing our two 18-year-old cats with them. That should be an interesting trip too! Dax & Melissa will be house-hunting in the Seattle area, as well as seeing our place for the first time, and visiting with family and friends out there.

Just think, one month from today we'll be showing Dax & Melissa around our new hometown in the beautiful Pacific Northwest! We can't wait! As a matter of fact, that's what we're focusing on now to get us through the next few weeks of stress!

After we get settled in and get the computers hooked up, I'll post some pics of our trip.

[> [> And you know that cross-country move all too well, PM! We went to one of our Orlando favorites today for lunch--Season's 52. And then, dinner tonight at our favorite Thai place, Thai Thani. It was an eatin' kind of day! OK, back to packing...if I never see another cardboard box in my life it will be too soon for me! -- Lynn, 20:45:38 06/17/07 Sun [1]

[> I know exactly what it's like to move to the opposite side of the country. Three years ago, I moved from Seattle to Orlando. Thankfully, all I had to move was a car and my stuff. Hope you have a great adventure in your new home. Although I spoke to my parents yesterday and they said it was 50 degrees. Brrrr... -- mandevilla, 05:38:02 06/18/07 Mon [1]

[> [> What route did you drive, Mandy--and how long did it take you? (LOTS more inside) ------>> -- Lynn, 07:32:22 06/18/07 Mon [1]

I think the quickest way is diagonally across country, going through Colorado, the midwest, then the southeast to FL--it's about 3100 miles that way. We're taking the SW route which is 3800 miles, stopping overnight in Alabama, Arkansas, and New Mexico. Although this route is adding about 700 miles, we want to stop in the Phoenix area and have a short visit with Grammy, and our other relatives who live out there.

After leaving AZ, we'll stop overnight in central CA, and spend one night in Eugene, OR, where my brother & wife live. From Eugene, it's only 4.5 hours to our new home in Poulsbo! This will be the closest my brother and I have lived to each other in over 40 years! He did a Ft. Lauderdale to Seattle move with his wife and two young sons many years ago, and that "begat" our Seattle family connection. His kids grew up, married, had their own families--and then after college Jill spread her wings and moved out near her cousins, got a job and married a Seattle guy. Now we'll be joining the Northwest clan, and soon Dax & Melissa will too!

This move is something we've wanted to do ever since visiting my brother and his family for the first time in the early 1980's when Jill was six and Dax four. We were still living in Illinois at the time, and we absolutely fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and planned to live there someday. We have spent nearly all our vacations out there, in all different seasons.

No, western WA is definitely not an area for everyone--it's quite chilly, damp and gloomy for much of the year, but that's just to make you appreciate the glorious short summer! :-) Jill called yesterday and said it was drizzly and in the 50s. That sounded heavenly to us! It's been so oppressively hot and humid down here this last month that we can't wait to get there!

[> Been there and done that. Moving isn't really fun for me anymore... more inside ---> -- Busta, 15:13:27 06/19/07 Tue [1]

since I have SO much stuff that definietly exhaust me heavily.

It would take me weeks of re-organize and pack which make it difficult for me. With heavy stuff like TV, furniture, compact fridge and moving stuff on my own really burden me on my arthritis. I took a break constantly when packing and packing stuff in truck/cargo van. It's really overwhelming.

I usually rent a cargo van or truck to move around... When I moved between Memphis & WA State was a cargo van. Last move I did from Wa St to here was renting a truck.

I used to moved around alot in San Diego, Los Angeles and Pacific Northwest which had worn me off already. So that made me having a goal is to try stay put where I am.

Finally, I'm able to stay put and hope to stay put a little big longer! :D It's been 8 years now living here, I think that's longest I've ever stayed. so YAY!

Your road trip from Orlando to Seattle sounds like a great plan...

I'm never driving through Oklahoma at night because of thunderstorms which is VERY frightening! I did drove all night in Oklahoma with heavy lightings and thunderstorms! That time I moved from Memphis to Seattle in 1995. I know driving in Texas during daytime can be incredible boring so I did drove at night which felt like its short trip. :D

When time is near, I hope you guys have a great road trip!
