Her tone was quiet because she hated not being truthful with him, but there was just no way that she could answer his questions. The genuine concern in his features and his soft touches had her lower lip trembling for an instant and she blinked rapidly for a moment, but she forced away the emotions.

He frowned a little, looking at her face and then the hint of bruises revealed by her sweater sleeves moving up a touch. "You hungry? I'll make you something..."
