I was in about 4th grade at Waverly when I decided to have lunch at Huntley Farms. Just a simple burger and fries, and I had the money.

It went well except for the part about crossing Rt. 22, which apparently some of the other diners (teachers) thought a reportable offense.

The Principal, Miss Ralston, had a way of bugging her eyes out at you that could make you quiver and promise to never commit that particular transgression again. That particular visit to her office wasn't my first, or last.

Years later I realized two things: A whole bunch of kids my age from the Huntley neighborhood crossed Rt. 22 every day, and had I opted for the permissable lunch at home, I would have crossed twice as many streets and gone twice as far from the school.
