I came across a website of a woman who paints the designs on dresses instead of embroidery etc....they look very lovely and supposedly are much lighter-weight. I was wondering if anyone has actually seen a dancer with one of these dresses on. If so, what was your impression? Do you think this is something that would be accepted by the dance community?
-I've seen them a number of times, without realizing it at first. The last time was at a few a few months ago. I was watching a dancer, thinking, I like that dress, but it's missing something... I decided that the embroidery needed to be outlined in some way to make it stand out more. It was a stunning dress, but just missing that little bit. The dancer walked right by me later on, and to my surprise it was a completely painted dress. And very lovely close up. At that same feis the previous year was the first time I saw the dresses, at a vendor table on display. From a few steps away I didn't realize they were painted until closer inspection. Alright, I didn't realize until I went home, saw their website, with one of the dresses I'd seen, saying it was painted. The dresses on display were beautiful, very bright colors, and stood out well. It's fairly accepted in our region, but due to the prices going up over the last year, I think that may make some people go with traditional embroidery. Before, it was cheaper to get the painted dress, by a few hundred dollars, now the price is similar to the traditional style.
--A dancer at our school has one of the painted dresses. While the colors and the blending are lovely, the dress seems "flat" from stage. I feel it would look better if the painted designs were outlined with embroidery. That would allow the great color blending, while adding some dimension to the designs.
