I’ve had chronic problems with my ears for many years, and when they get really bad, they’ll fill up with fluid just like you describe. The pain can be agonizing. It’s become even more of an issue since I took up flying, as an episode like that can easily ground me for a month. I take 1 to 2 grams of vitamin C (which is way, way, way beyond the recommended maximum dosage) and several grams of garlic oil every day in order to ward off infections (as well as vampires!). I’m also a hand-washing fanatic and I make it a point to stay well clear of sick people. My measures seem to work for the most part. I’ve avoided getting sick this year (and last) except for one brief and very memorable bout of a stomach illness, which I think was actually a mild case of food poisoning. Not as bad as real food poisoning mind you, but that’s another story altogether.

You seem to get sick a lot more often than you should, which makes me wonder if there isn’t something deeper going on. In my case, my Eustachian tubes don’t drain properly, which essentially turns my inner ear into a playground for any opportunistic microbe. All I can do is try to prevent myself from catching them in the first place, because once they make their way to my ear, I’m in for a world of pain. Probably explains why I’m deaf in one ear. I’m wondering if you don’t have a similar problem?
