Hank, I've been finding some good rubs since the middle of August out at Bull Creek. Not a big number of rubs like I'll see in a few weeks, but only the bigger trees being rubbed.
You're right about most of the acorns, but the low scrub oaks have some big acorns right now. Deer will also be targeting water plants, palmetto berries, and gallberries if they are ripe. Look for persimmons too, they should be on the ground right now.
No matter what rubs or scrapes I find, I am almost always setting up on funnels for bowhunting. Trail intersections, places where trails hit the edge of ponds or swamps, fence crossings, culverts, canals, etc...
