Being the glutton for punishment I am, I went to the country club for lunch today. I knew I would be encouraged to have a cigarette and I was ready for it.
Bernadine even said she would smoke one if I would have one. I told her I was finished with smoking. Jean told Bernadine she could have one of hers even if Megan wanted to not smoke.
Bernadine said she would pass. Jean said "yeah, you could get to be like me and feel addicted." Meanwhile Gloria was smoking away. If I ever did smoke again, it would be one of her Marlboros.
Parke was smoking a Parliament, a brand I probably should have tried more of before quitting. She quickly changed the conversation by telling us that her son Cam has broken up with Neely, the leader of the girls sports program. This apparently happened after Jessica left Neely's house last night. It was a phone deal.
You may not be able to have sex on the phone but you can sure end a relationship.
Gloria asked how she took the news. Parke said she packed a blunt and smoked it and the realization is just now hitting her again. I said they were two wonderful kids and I was sure they would have a good life. Privately, I was relieved. Parke is a nut hitting on grass in her 40s proves it.
After getting home, I called Theresa, Neely's mother and also the mother of Walt, who my daughter likes. Theresa said the idea was entirely Neely's. She added it wasn't really Cam but his parents.
She said Cameron, Parke's husband, is never around and this drug thing in her 40s is too much. Theresa also told me that she is not smoking, giving up what had been a growing social thing for her.
She said Neely is sorry she came up with the idea that the entire team should smoke. She said she fears Maria is going out of control with all the stuff.
I said Boyd was the problem. He's not a good influence for girls and I was glad Jessica only gave him a passing glance. Theresa said Walt really likes Jessica but wishes she, too, would stop smoking.
I said Walt is such a polite guy. He may treat a girl nicer than any guy in high school. I also said Jessica had the habit kicked and started back to be one of the girls. Now she may have a hard time quitting.
Theresa agreed. She said with all the girls trying to smoke and some of the mothers making a run at it, there is bound to be some linger effects.
She then brought up Carla, Boyd's sister. Carla is not at all interested in giving up smoking and will just ride out her senior year. "I hope she doesn't smoke so much she can't be the catcher," Theresa said.
I didn't bring up Lisa but she is smoking 4 or 5 cigarettes after practice each day and usually 2 before going to school.
The girls' ability to do without cigarettes will be tested in the tournament they go to this weekend. They will spend Friday and Saturday nights there. Even with me not smoking, our room will be a sanctuary whenever Jess can slip off to smoke.
