Hi Mark, I have had the same problem, the misty looking water is a build up of ammonia, it also causes an oil like build up on the surface. This has to peak, then as the ammonia starts coming down the level of nitrate goes up, that is how it happens. I purchased a product that keep ur nitrate level for a year or so, its small white, pellets that u mix into ur gravel, hope this helps
