Subject: gourmis behaviour

Why is my golden coloured gouramis banging his 'head' against the side of the tank? he goes up to the surface, opens his mouth for a 'breath' of fresh air, and then goes back to banging on the side of the tank.

he is not too large - about 3 cm in length, and is in a 20 gallon community tank with swordtails, platys, mollies and a couple of bottom feeders. They all seem pretty happy - except the gouramis who is banging is head against the wall!
