Hi! I am fairly new to the whole aquarium thing myself, but I have done a ton of reading. If I were you, I think I would consider adding Cycle to my tank. It releases harmless bacteria into the tank to balance nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia. It is not toxic and your fish will not OD on it. Don't add a ton but do add one or tow capfuls per 10 gallons. This is recommended any time you add new fish to your tank. Also, be sure to condition your water before you refresh the tank... Test it before adding it and when you do add it... do so slowly. By conditioning the water first, you reduce the levels of other harmful chemicals in the water... making the ammonia a little less shocking to your fish's systems. Also, be careful not to overfeed your fish... only give them what they can eat in five minutes...and scoop out any excess. By doing so, your filter will work better biologically. If you have a setting on your filter that slows it during feeding times... use it. It will reduce the amount of food that is wasted by being sucked into the filter and prolong your filter life (a good thing since it is a breeding ground for bacteria).

Hope that was of some help,

Sara :)
