I have an Oranda with this same type of problem. When I feed them flakes he gulps air and then after awhile I will find him floating upside down. He turned back up after awhile. I solved this problem by getting sinking pellets. He no longer experiences that problem unless I feed him flake food. Also he doesn't seem to do to bad on floating pellets just not flake food. Hope this helps.
