I have a rule. It is....... Never, ever, EVER buy fish from Petco or PetSmart. This is a great way to kill ALL of the fish in your tank. Basically these big chains just buy fish, put them out and sell them. They don't care if they are diseased or stressed or starving. You are MUCH better off finding a smaller store that actually cares for it's fish and water system or getting fish shipped from a reputable dealer. A lot of the problems with fish in stores (big chains & smaller dealers alike) come from the fact that they don't care for new arrivals properly. If they don't quarantine & feed (and medicate if needed) they are selling poor quality fish. It is not easy to find a good aquarium shop. Luckily for me, one recently opened where I live, otherwise all my new fish would be shipped to me directly.
