AUDIOSLAVE Frontman Opens Restaurant In Paris - Mar. 9, 2006

According to MTV.com, AUDIOSLAVE/ex-SOUNDGARDEN frontman Chris Cornell and wife Vicky opened a restaurant, Black Calavados (BC), in Paris last week with a launch party attended by Pink and several models and designers. Alexandre de Betak, best known for designing the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, designed the restaurant. Cornell, meanwhile, has signed on as the new face of John Varvatos men's wear and will perform at the designer's 4th Annual Stuart House Benefit in Beverly Hills, California.

~~~ Chris really is doing all the things he's always wanted to do!
If ever in Paris.....
Chris Loves Paris
Further proof that Chris Cornell is one of the coolest — and luckiest — guys on the planet.
The Audioslave lead singer, formerly of Soundgarden, opened his new restaurant, Black Calavados, in Paris today, according to a press release. The sexy star, currently the face of fashion giant Varvatos, greeted guests, which included Pink, designer John Galliano, model Natalia Vodianova, and other notables in the fashion industry, in town for Paris Fashion Week. The restaurant and bar are located off the corner of Avenues Pierre ler de Serbie and George V, across from the Four Seasons Hotel. It's a joint effort of Cornell, his wife Vicky and brother-in-law Nicholas Karayiannis, aka Nick Blast. It was designed by Alexandre De Betak, known for his production of the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. A new Audioslave album is due in the spring.
**p.s. If you're ever in Seattle, Ben Shepherd opened a pub in November called, Hazelwood.
Do you think he'll end his walk with the Blue Steel pose, or could he pull off the Magnum??
I hear he's going to do a Hanes commercial. Something about him tossing his guitar to Micheal Jordon - and the Jordon bank shots it or something.
And then there's the Axe commercial where he's on stage and his wife sprays him down with Axe and then a zillion underage girls show up for to listen to Audioslave. The highlight of that one is the girl outside straddling his tour bus (because she can smell his deoderant).
From lurking around I found out that the Stuart House Benefit is an event that we'd probably agree is for a good cause.
Maybe one of our LA unofficial members can drop by and represent? *koff* Stilly *koff*
last year's benefit
The Stuart House is a program of the Rape Treatment Center at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, and has become “an internationally recognized, model program that was created to serve the special needs of sexually abused children.” Staggering statistics as reported in the event program tell us that about one out of every four girls and one out of every eight boys are sexually abused before they reach eighteen years of age. In addition, more than half of all rape victims are under eighteen years of age.
In many cases when sexually abused children and their families seek help, they sometimes need to go to as many as six locations and are often subjected to over a dozen interviews. “To remedy these problems, Stuart House provides a one-stop center where child victims can receive all the services they need in a single location—that was designed to provide a therapeutic environment for children,” the literature explains. “Police officers, prosecutors and child protection workers have offices at Stuart House and work as a team to help child victims. In addition, children receive expert forensic medical examinations and comprehensive treatment services that are so critical to their recovery from the trauma of sexual abuse.”
Actually I don't have anything to add to that story, since I don't go to big ass events like that.
Only this does point out that even if someone has taken the odd turn in how they chose to present themselves it doesn't make it all bad. Obviously it doesn't mean anyone else has to agree with it, participate in it, or even enjoy it.
I think people automatically see some things and paint them with a brush that they may or may not fit into. Fashion doesn't automatically equal devoid of a soul or a social conscience.
Like I said before, art, fashion and music all blend together.
I just never thought Chris was into that world either and if he was ever a spokesperson for something he alwasys had a good reason. I mean PINK at your freaking party, WTF!!
When he wore that 90 clothing line it was because he liked the clothing. When he used to be a cook in a restaurant was he always dreaming of opening his own restaurant someday? I don't get it, and I hope it works out, because he is doing this with family and we know what happened the last time.
Here's what the inside of the restaurant looks like. Personally I don't like it. It's too black and industrial, it could be a little softer more elegant.(art deco)
(it's also just one pic)
Very interesting.
Is it just me, or is older Chris turning into the things that younger Chris used to rail against with much force?
Not trying to harsh on the man, just an interesting development in the life of one of my all time favorite artists. Seems he has become what he once despised.
I hope Chris performs this at the benefit.
I don’t mind stealing bread
From the mouths of decadence
But I can’t feed on the powerless
When my cup’s already overfilled
But it’s on the table
The fire is cooking
And they’re farming babies
While the slaves are working
The blood is on the table
And their mouths are choking
But I’m growing hungry
... and maybe an acoustic Limowreck?
The ZooCprnell-lander image is a hoot.
Hey, but really..... Jumping or no jumping. Though I don't think designer=social sinner......
I sure don't want to come off as one of those people who reserve an altar of supreme righteousness for everything Cornell does. Cause no, he's got clay feet and cavities in his soul same as the rest of us unlucky mortals.
The fact is having little thoughts in the past as to what he could be like, I'm just like "yeah whatever". I also have no particular issues with fashion (at ALL) so seeing the dude dressed up is a bit unusual given the past but not a hot-button for me.
My troubles rest squarely in how the new music feels to me. I guess that could be a reflection of his life changes, but honestly the man could do just about anything if he could bring me some 'tune-age' that would sway me the way some stuff used to. That's where I start to part ways some.
Yeah, ummmm-NO I take that back..... My hot-button --I guess I would start to look at him in shock if he became born again and aggressively started herding his sheep towards the saviors light, I might freak. I wish I didn't have that view of that, but I do. Some people who are extremely religious do tend to freak me the hell out. Short of that Cornell could start pimping Jaguar and I'd probably ignore it.
With all the crap in our lives that gets broken, and all the crap in the world that gets broken, I have less time to care if someone is slipping on a suit and looking like they walked out of an $60k per page magazine. Musically it's another issue all together, it's why I found him, it's why gravitated here. I do feel a void there in that area that I wish would shift or close someday. The new stuff is something of an misfit for me emotionally, but what ya gonna do? You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need (some place else).
4 things.
Fashion is a form of art. Unfortunately, I think we get confused with commercialism and disregard it pretty easily as an art. And so do the designers.
I like Audioslave's second album better than the first. I think the old Chris comes out a little more in it. Both his style and his life have changed dramatically. You just have to decide to move with or away from it.
At least it's Pink (who is a little bit of a rebel. That last video was a blast!). I don't like her, but I'd be throwing up if it were Jessica Simpson or Tara Reed or someone like that..
And maybe this is mean of me. Supposedly I am a mean person. Anyhow...does that designer...he...when I look at that picture...I think:
MasterbaSHUNN
OperaSHUNN
DesperatSHUNN
I don't know quite how to articulate why it bugs me so much, but I'll try.
To me, CC was always one of the few artists who was more interested in the roots than the foliage. More concerned with exploring our insides than our outsides. He always seemed more annoyed than anything by his own attractiveness - that it brought baggage he would just as well not deal with (fans only interested in his looks, it distracted from his music's message, etc.).
To me, that attitude was so intertwined with his art that it was almost central to what he and SG and the whole Seattle movement were saying: that superficial things don't define you, the contents of your heart and mind do.
I agree. He learned to embrace being pretty instead of battle it. Because, as you know, it just sucks to be attractive. People are nicer to you and they might even actually listen to you.
I'm being sarcastic and I do know people like that! "Oh it's so hard being attractive!" weep weep weep fuckin' weep. I bought that shit 15 years ago. I even remember thinking "Jesus Crimany, I can't even walk through the f'n mall without some guy googling at me." Yesterday, after going through my hs yearbook to find my nephews teacher (that I graduated with), I thought it'd be funny to give myself 80s hair. I had my bangs up probably 3 or 4 inches - and no one even noticed because no one looks at me. I wore it that all day. Just like my new contacts - no one noticed that I wasn't wearing glasses all weekend either except my son. I'm like the invisible guy on Mystery Men.
I think we get a little wiser as we get older and embrace our good qualities as much as we can while we still have them.
In a way, it turns my stomach too. Chris a model! Puke. But another part of me kinda understands.
Just to clarify, the party at Chris restaurant was for John Galliano, and it also happened to the opening. It's the way the media reports on it that makes it out to be like they are all friends now. Just like when they reported on Chris engagement and named all the models and ctors who just happened to be there.
I still don't understand Chris in alot of this, if it was just a little change ok, but he's doing so much.
Not quite Zagat...
Chris's Place
Black Calvados
Look at these poor models! So delicate, so fragile. You don't want them out in the world, bumping into stuff, or their hollow bones might shatter into a thousand pieces. Such is the genesis behind restaurants like Black Calvados, formed via partnership between couture kid Alex de Betak and rocker Chris Cornell. There's some supposed relation to the original Calvados restaurant -- a fave of Aristotle Onassis -- but damned if I can see the connection. The cuisine is New American, to be picked at and secretly regurgitated by its anorexic clientele. Cornell's influence does bring in a small rock element more inclined to scarf the Kobe-beef miniburgers, but models and thrashers alike are really just there to relax behind multiple tiers of velvet ropes and enjoy very expensive bottle service. Is this the end of Le Paris Paris? Already?
He mentions Toni once again. He also di Hotel California at that Benefit...yuck. How about when SG used to tour in the Eagles old tour bus the Hotel California.
Up in It
Chris Cornell unplugs, Franz Ferdinand prepare for celebrity poker Had a chance to hang with Chris Cornell in L.A. recently while the Audioslave singer prepared to do a rare acoustic set to benefit the Stuart House, a wing of the Rape Treatment Center dedicated to helping sexually abused kids and their families. Cornell performed a wildly diverse seven-song set that drew on tunes from his Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog days, as well as covers of the Eagles' "Hotel California" and Elvis Costello's "(What's So Funny) 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding." "I'm doing very well now," said Cornell, "so it's great to be able to help someone else." The event, which the singer got involved with through friend John Varvatos (the two met when Cornell starred in a recent Varvatos fashion campaign), had another upside. "I was so excited to bring [my daughter] because David Schwimmer's supposed to be here," said Cornell, "and he does the voice of a giraffe in her favorite cartoon, Madagascar. So I wanted to introduce her to him just so she can trip on hearing him talk" . . .
I don't know but, you still always have that child so why not say I have 3 kids. I'm sure it's not easy always mentioning your previous marriage, but he should do it in the press because eventually his daughter will notice.
I think Julian Lennon was a great example of the forgotten child.
