Subject: Quandary???

I have a little dilemma to solve, so I thought I'd ask what you guys think I should do.

I wrote an article awhile back, and have submitted it to several magazines, but after initially claiming to be interested in publishing, the editors don't bother answering my emails.
The subject material is a little controversial, so I was expecting to have a problem getting it in print.

But finally a magazine says they will publish it- but theres a catch ~ they are just starting out, and don't have a budget for writers, which I guess means that I won't get paid. [never mind, only three months of research and writing :-( ]

So, do I let them run the story, and then at least I can say that I am a published author, which may help me get a foot in the door with any other articles I may write.

Or, do I try and sell it to someone else, which might not happen, as NZ is a small market, and only a few magazines are suitable for my story.

The other option, is try to sell it to a local TV network, who cover stories more radical than usually seen on the box.

Any thoughts would be helpful!!!

Option 1 sounds good - tell them it's the only freebie they'll get though.

I'd ask Chrys, our house writer! :) Isn't it great to have these peers here to ask for advice?!?!

Have you published anything else? I'd do it for the name recognition for free if you haven't. If your subject matter is controversial, and the publisher is new, you might get quite alot of recognition (or none at all depending on how they work it). From the classes I took (on writing for kids - mostly magazines), recognition is everything. If a bigger publisher doesn't know you, you're likely to never have your submission even read. I'd put it out for free.

I'm published. In the dumb poetry.com book (which is a big rip off) from like 5 years ago...and it's anonymous. But it's still pretty cool to claim to be published! :)

Yeah, I think I'd like to see the article in print, not just for the recognition, but because I think the info is important, and should be widely disseminated.
They're going to put it up on their website too, [with my permission]
The only downside is, that if I don't get paid for writing, then I really can't afford to keep doing it, and I have a whole heap of research gathered for several other articles that I was planning to tackle.

Thanks for the input Jes and NoSlave.:-)

I wouldn't hang up your hat yet! I'd be working on the next one. I know it takes time & money to research things - I'm doing that now for my touring company I haven't started yet. If you can get article #2 published and payed for....you may be able to start writing things off as business expenses. You should definately get #2 rolling and out there!! And post a link. :)

Hey Jes, the editor got in touch with me and says he wants to get together. He apparently has some ideas for other stories that he wants me to look at.
Which is cool, as long as he can offer me some cash, cause the overdraft is lookin' pretty heavy at the mo.

Appreciate the support:-)
