Subject: Black. White.
Did anyone catch the show Black. White. last night? It was really interesting.
They take a white and a black family and put them in a house together. The white family is made up to be black and the black to be white and they are to help each other out in kinda nailing the roles.
Now the black family seems to be the most affected. The black guy was surprised that as a white guy in a shoe store, the shoe was actcually put on his foot by the salesman. He said this had never happened before. I've never had that done, either. He went golfing and talked with people he would normally not have talked to. But it really wasn't clear if he wouldn't have talked to them by preference or because they'd be nasty to him. They were all very nice. And he got a job as a bartender in a predominately white area. That was interesting. One guy told him how this was the last caucasion (surprised at that word, because we normally just say white) neighborhood and that it was a good place to raise kids. He never really said anything racist or mean, but you know he would have never said that to a black guy.
Now the black lady had to go to a racism meeting of some sort that looked staged to me. Not alot happened there, except one guy fessed up to an inner-battle of trying not to stereotype.
Now their son, he was interesting. They made him go to ettiquette school. He wouldn't act the part. He said he doesn't deal with racism and that his friends are his friends and he sees no problem. He just wanted to get this show over with.
The white couple is really ridiculous and just something else. I don't know where they got them - because I honestly don't know anyone like them and would be embarrassed to say I did.
The daughter was interesting. She went to a Slam Poetry meeting and just couldn't do it. She just didn't have it in her. I know everyone of those black poets had to know there was something wrong. Anyhow, she learned alot, I think. That kind of poetry is raw and heartfelt. You can't sit there and not be affected.
The white guy is retarded. He went to a used car lot to see if he'd get waiting on and he did. Now I would have liked to see him have a clue and go to a BMW car lot. He said he was treated exactly the same either way. But if he says the N word one more time, I hope the black guy decks him. He said he's just waiting for someone to call him the N word because if he ignores it and doesn't give it any anger (I'm sorry - how could you not be angry?) and says (and I quote) "Why would you call me that?", he'll win and the racist will just shut up. Hello - welcome to the real world. I don't know that by the end of the show - and I don't know how long that is - he learns a little something.
And the white lady is just clueless. She has been using words like JIVE. Like maybe before the show, she watched a bunch of Good Times thinking that was realistic and current. She just went to a racism meeting and smartly kept her mouth shut. She and her husband didn't do much - but I'd bet - after gauging their reaction to each other as black - they went home and did it with their makeup on. Horny bastards.
I don't know - the show just has alot of promise, and I hope it turns out well (but it might not). Anyone else see it?

OMG!!! I was dying to watch this, I can't believe I didn't watch t.v. last night. It sounds so interesting, the face makeup on the white people who were made to look black was so amazing. I only saw a pic of them, and I've been wanting to watch. Thanks now I know when it's on.

They played it twice last night? Anyone see it? I'm telling you this is extremely interesting.
I'm ashamed of being white though - that couple is clueless. Good thing their daughter is just awsome.

"I was born a poor black child."
There's a video of me like The Jerk on the porch who can't keep rhythm. I was going to enter a talent show with my friends and I was the only white girl and the only one who couldn't keep the rhythm. We did our routine (U-G-L-Y You ain't got not alibi, you ugly hey hey you ugly). My grandpa taped it but it reminded him of the Jerk so bad that the whole camera is shaking and you can hear him just trying to hold in a good laugh. It sounds racist, but it really wasn't. It's so funny. He told me they destroyed the tape - my Grandma assured me that they hadn't.
Anyhow "The new phonebook is here. The new phonebook is here!"

"The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity I need! My name in print! That really makes somebody! Things are going to start happening to me now."

Wednesday nights at 10 - but I can't remember what channel. YOU would find it really interesting.
The white girl dresses up as a black girl and joins a Slam Poetry group and feels so badly about her lie that she tells them. Pretty good stuff. And Slam Poetry is more my speed - I think you'd like it too.

yeah it sounds like i'd love it : )
our channels are kinda minimal here, and i'm not positive which ones we get. we only have 42 or 43. all i am certain about is we don't get comedy central! anyway i will check it out.
slam poetry = interesting. i went to a few slams, purely as a listener, in college. one time my roommate and i were even asked to judge. interesting experience cuz it showed in a way, how arbitrary the judging was.

TG - did you watch it?
They switched focus last night and I think the white woman is FINALLY getting it. The white guy, though is a lost cause. The black family didn't do a whole lot this time and were kinda put in a bad light.

MAN!!!! You missed a great show. First, the white couple dressed as black went to a square dancing bar. He didn't notice anything, but she did. They weren't welcome there. THEN, she 'came out' to her new black friend that she was white and that was kinda funny. Her friend said she knew something was wrong when she said she hadn't read the bible in like 10 years! Anyhow, this lady (who does a radio show I've heard, an advice/talk one but I can't remember her name) take the white lady and her husband in black makeup through a hostile community where they are REALLY REALLY uncomfortable. This is because it's a white woman with a black man - or so they say (part may have been just because they weren't from that area). Anyhow, the white lady was just drawn to this and wanted to walk through this alone. She was so upset she cried - apparantly she'd never been in a situation like that. The husband is retarded and just said he felt hostility. He made it sound as if only black men were prejudice - but the retard was in black makeup. She tried and tried to explain to him what it would feel like to have generation upon generation of your family treated this badly simply for the color of their skin. She gets it. He doesn't. It's just really really interesting. I think next week they'll delve into the black family again.
It's the FX channel btw - and they replay it again at 11.

Re: Black. White. -- taurus, 13:04:19 03/23/06 Thu [1]
OK, it is definately different for someone who is black.
I don't want to start anything, but I asked my husband if he watched the show the other day and I explained what it was about and he said it sounded interesting and wondered if there may be the preconcieved idea of what each person goes through.
Anyway, he said that the otherday he went down to get the parts at work from the truck delivery. He said he just took all the stuff in and no one even blinked or said anything about it. The next day he said the black guy he works with went down to get the parts instead and he was stopped and they called the office to find out if he was an employee. My husband asked him how he can handle stuff like that and he said he was used to it, because it's happened his whole life. No wonder the woman on the show was crying.

Perfect example. Last night, at the Square Dance club, the bartender asked the lady if she wanted to start a tab and she said yes - her husband was in the bathroom and would be right over with the credit card. They wouldn't give her the COFFEE she ordered until he did. She said that never happened to her as a white woman. I was out Saturday and my table was served 5 drinks before they took my card!
Each group did start out with preconcieved ideas - especially the white guy. The thing that's tough is that the black people have dealt with it all their lives, so have already adjusted and know what to expect. The white family hasn't/doesn't. That's what so very interesting about the show. And the interaction between the families. I don't know that this show will do great things or that the families will learn and then embrace each other. But it's really really interesting.
