Southport's victory over Chester City in a rearranged Nationwide Conference fixture gave them some revenge for last Saturday's defeat in the quarter-finals of the F.A.Umbro Trophy at the Deva stadium.

And although their manager Mark Wright was reasonably happy, he expressed his and the player's disappointment at that defeat in the trophy.

" I thought we were the better side then although we lost and we certainly were superior to Chester tonight," commented Wright.

"I thought everybody played their part in the win and don't forget that they are only part-timers who have had to turn out against full time opposition after doing a days work."

The goal which seperated the sides and gave Southport a Conference double over Chester came in the 28th minute.

A corner on the left by former Liverpool player Mike Marsh came off the bar and Simon Parke headed home from close range.

Southport goalkeeper Steve Dickinson had one of his quieter matches but he had to perform heroics to prevent an equaliser midway through the second half.

He flung himself to his right to make a superb one-handed save from a close range header by Mark Beesley. But if that had gone in it would have been an injustice to Southport who fully deserved their victory.

It was in fact the first on their own ground in the Conference since way back on November 28th, when they beat Doncaster Rovers.
