Subject: Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979) Theatrical Release

I saw the feature film at a theater in early 1979, and recall the opening titles with the music and attractive ladies. It seemed impressive on the big screen at the time, almost comparable to the opening titles of the James Bond films. The opening song is sung by Kipp Lennon, who is no relation to the famous Beatle, but is a younger sibling of the famous Lennon Sisters.

Unfortunately I cannot remember anything at all about the movie, but it was 34 years ago, most likely in April 1979.

The TV series launched in September 1979, and ran for two years. The feature film was edited into the first episode.

A highlight of the series was a guest appearance by Buster Crabbe, as Officer Torch has previously mentioned.

In those days I probably had seen a few photos from the classic Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials in magazines like Starlog and Famous Monsters, but had never seen the serials.

I also saw that as a feature length film in a theater. I'm sure prior years of Star Wars gave this BR film a boost as it did others that followed.

Not far later in 1979, a TV network aired the movie...would imagine this was considered the pilot in a way. Soon, new adventures were aired. The show ran for two seasons...in 1979 and 1980.

As I recall, some parental groups objected to the violence and racy material for TV of the first season. I think a letter writing/call-in campaign was involved ...don't recall details, but there was a very toned down second season in 1980 with a Hawkman character involved. The show seemed more wholesome. Perhaps many preferred hotter material... there was no third season.

Buster Crabbe appeared in a two-parter during the first season I believe. He played a fighter pilot brought out of retirement since the hidden city was in danger. In a dogfight, he saved Buck's life...and there was an interesting play on words between the two men. I enjoyed this show.
