Charles Middleton as Ming, with Anne Gwynne as Lady Sonja as a close second.

Everyone did a good job including Jean Rogers and, despite his lack of experience as an actor, Buster Crabbe.

Crabbe exhibited sincerity, honesty and other good traits in his work. That takes some talent to do onscreen. He grew in confidence as an actor. They could make a million Flash Gordon movies, but no one could do it like he did. I'd have to give Ted Lorch as an equal to Middleton. They played off each other so well and were both veteran stage actors.

I may do flip flops on this, since I'm torn a bit...but bottom line, overall, I'll cast my vote for Buster Crabbe as Flash Gordon, for reasons comparable to those indicated by Rick. As for flip flops, I was going to first give my vote to veteran actor Charles Middleton for his part as Ming the merciless, but changed my mind after some thought. Technically, Middleton had the acting edge when he was on; Buster Crabbe though had some charismatic super hero-like ability and qualities as the good guy that I just liked, as I'm sure many others did. So, for now, I choose Buster Crabbe playing Flash Gordon.
