I will concur with Officer Torch and say that "City on the Edge of Forever" and "The Menagerie" are among the finest of the series.

I also like "Where No Man Has Gone Before", which was the second pilot and actually sold the series to NBC. They had previously rejected "The Cage" pilot as "too cerebral". Many scenes from it were later used in "The Menagerie", as Officer Torch noted.

Gary Lockwood and Sally Kellerman give excellent performances. The episode is intelligent, but contains plenty of action and, I believe, is the only appearance of the phaser rifle. I would guess that the action was ratcheted up to placate the network brass.

Scotty (James Doohan) looks really young in this episode, and his hair looks different than it did afterward.

Dr McCoy (DeForest Kelley) wasn't in this episode.

The episode contains one notable blooper in the form of the "James R. Kirk" inscription on a tombstone.

If the original pilot had sold we would have had Star Trek starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike, and might never have seen the creation of Captain James T. Kirk.

Sergeant Tim
