Back in those days, were they called serials, cliffhangers, chapter plays or none of the above?

In my previous post I forgot to give a thumbs up for 70 years of FGCTU, but am doing so now.

Tim...in the NY area, we called them serials. Perhaps terms such as Chapter Plays, Cliffhangers, or others were used in different regions, different countries. It's only been well within the past decade, interacting with various FG sites and forums, that I've come across terms other than the term..serials. Guess it's like regional differences perhaps ...eg, soda pop, soda.

FYI, there is an interesting site and it's on LINKS here...just go to EOFFTV. It's a great site, similar to IMDb in some ways...check it out. Just type what you want to know in its Search area. Rick is also guru with timelines on this kind of material.

As a kid, cash was tight for going to the "showhouse" as we called theaters here then. When I did go, standard was a double feature(or a longer movie maybe in color), some cartoons, newsreel, a short, coming attractions, rarely a "serial"...pot luck though. They were moreso fill-in during packed kiddie matinees on Saturday, but noise and flying popcorn from rowdy crowds didn't appeal, so I caught FG and "serials" on the old 14 inch Philco; Serial Theater, hosted kid shows, etc. These became less frequent though until PBS televised them later.

Well, I see reminiscing got me here. Take care.

The release date refers to the first chapter being screened of the serial film. In the U.S., the correct name is serial. As for overseas, the terms can vary, as noted above. My mother saw countess serials and features and at the time, it was only 5 cents admission.
