Subject: Poll: Favorite sound effects

One of my favorites is the sound used for the rocketships. The sound editor did a great job collecting real sounds to use for the films.

Definitely YES, for decades. Often wondered what sound dept. utilized. Had assumed rocketship sounds (not always stratosleds though) sounded like piston prop aircraft engines, on a sound track and used since audiences were familiar with that sound. (Same sound was also used for other gizmos in the FG/BR serial, and I think I heard a subdued version when the death ray machine ran amok in an earlier serial, The Phantom Empire.)

Some of us yaked about sounds on forums. Some said, airplane engines, others said electrical items like buzzing transformer laminations, other parts, fans and home appliances...a fellow was sure it was the sound of an (early) electric shaver, perhaps by Schick. << This was indicated more than once. Anybody with ideas/opinions out there, let us know...obviously curiousity persists.

Sound effects can be an interesting subject. I recall when Battlestar Galactica came out, some wondered why starfighters had the sound of a jet engine since it should be silent in space (like in 2001, A Space Odyssey). But, this is what people expected. Hey! let's face it, we like razzle dazzle...and often set technicalities aside for entertainment. As long as it's not a documentary, OK by me!
