Subject: Ray and Flash Gordon DVDs ( Barin, I need your input )

Ray,

Why not invest in the Flash Gordon DVD set by Image Entertainment? All 3 films for around $30. Barin, as rightful ruler of Arboria, could you provide some input, too?

I have not one, but two copies of the Image Entertainment DVDs. My Princess Aura thought it a little weird but she's indulged me all these years so... I wanted a backup in case I damaged my primary play set. (Well, I starred in it, didn't I?)

The quality is generally excellent especially considering the fact that the original negatives no longer exist. It's great to be able to zip from one chapter to another, freeze frame interesting scenes, etc.

In the early 90s I bought a VHS copy of "Mars" that, among other things, laid a second musical track of directionless sixties-type music on top of the original sacred FG music. The result was just a jumble of noise that submerged the dialog.

Any FG aficionado really should have the Image Entertainment set to fully enjoy FG at its best.

I've read about some of those soundtracks in the video versions of the films. Very annoying. I had a VHS release of the 1940 film that was a 16mm print with the alternate titles and Jack Narz narrating the chapter forewards. I believe I still have one someplace in storage.

Some years back, I bought the feature versions issued by Questar. Rocketship, The Deadly Ray from Mars, The Peril from the Planet Mongo. When I put them on I was very upset at the missing footage that was cut out. About a year later, KFS re-issued the original serials in 1995 on VHS ( later on laserdisc and DVD ).

I have all 3 from Image Entertainment, with a second copy of Flash Gordon ( 1936 ) and Conquers the Universe ( 1940 ). I only have one of Trip to Mars on a flipper disc that Image produced and one of Buck Rogers by VCI.

The nitrate release prints are gorgeous on the DVDs. You can see that luminous glow on the whites and lights, in contrast to the blacks in the film. That's a trademark of nitrate-based film stock.

Knowing me, I'll probably buy another FG box set in the future.

Yes, Ray, I am talking to you. LOL. 2007 sounds fine to me, too. You are booked up right now, so the New Year will offer you new things to gain DVD interest in. You need my help, feel free...
