This topic is probably the prime "Flashpoint" (!) of any discussion of the sacred Flash Gordon serials. I know that I'm in the minority but I prefer "Mars" even though it's missing the delightful Dale of the original and Ming has somehow lost his interest
in her.

I've always felt that while "FG '36" has a great variety of kingdoms, monsters and, of course, the ever-delightful Princess Aura, it's always seemed choppy to me. The story line in "Mars" flows better, more coherently while "FG '36" jumps from one threat to another at a feverish pace. It's a thrilling trip but viewing it as we do today, that is, two or more chapters back-to-back, it seems chaotic in parts.

"Mars", despite its faults holds together in a fairly seamless fashion. I've even come to accept Happy Hapgood although it would have been better if he had stayed at his desk at the New York Dispatch. FG '36 , for all its virtues, seems a bit pasted together although I sincerely enjoy every moment of it.

That said, I recognize that there are too many visits to the Forest Kingdom in "Mars" but the continual threat of the Nitron Lamp and the sub-plot of Ming attempting to wrest power from Azura makes for a great saga that is well-developed over its chapters.

As far as "Universe" is concerned, I miss Jean Rogers and Richard Alexander although the wicked and fiendish Lady Sonja and the deadly Captain Torch are up to fulfilling Ming's evil plans. I also think "Ming" Middleton had, by the time of the filming of "Universe", perfected not only the Death Dust but his persona as Ming. He snarls his way through "Universe", relishing every moment as Emperor of the Universe. I think if Rogers and Alexander had been in it, it would be my favorite.

But I never did like wearing those shorts!

I enjoy the original, "Space Soldiers". Priscilla Lawson as Princess Aura made that serial for me. Her attempts to separate Flash from Dale and keep her father, Ming, from executing him was a tremendous task. I missed her in the "Trip to Mars", and the replacement for Priscilla was given a minor role and was not the cunning individual compared to the original.

Dale does come off as a stonger character in the later episodes but Princess Aura always gets my vote.
