That is great news, Rick. All Quiet on the Western Front is an amazing early sound film depicting the horrors of war. It's hard to believe Lew Ayres was ever that young, having seen him in a lot of his later stuff.

Hi Tim,

I have the previous DVD release of Western Front by Universal. I'm curious as to what they have restored with the 2/07 DVD issue. It's said the original recording has been remastered.

The soundtrack was on Vitadisc, which were too noisy, so they took it to optical music tracks in the 30's. The DVD I have is from 35mm release prints the studio used. The original prints are believed to have been destroyed decades ago. Library of Congress restored the film about 5 years ago, but Universal didn't bother with it for the initial DVD release in 2003.

The original 1930 sound recording had no dialogue, just some effects and music tracks, including Western Front March. Sam Perry composed it.

The previous DVD version has dialogue and the Western Front March is nowhere on the soundtrack. Also, some footage is missing from all previous video releases that LOC restored in theirs. I checked and Universal has pulled the title from retail sale, since the new one will be out in a few months. We'll find out more in time.

Yes, it is hard to believe Lew Ayres was that young going so far back in time. His career spanned so many decades afterwards.

Rick
