The individual police officer who answers the call shouldn't be the scapegoat here. Would you go into the woods by yourself to confront 20 to 30 "teens"? I don't think so. (Discretion is the better part of valor.) Logic dictates you wait for back up and in a small town it's not always available (depending what's happening elsewhere in town.) Recently I was the "back up" for a Dracut officer because no other officer was available. He was by himself in a remote area confronting two non English speaking "gentlemen". (who as we later found could understand English when he had to). Although this turned out fine, you never know what's going to happen. (Who could forget the shootout on "Little Merrimack Avenue")Even in the Sun article, they said there were "teens" with baseball bats and a gun. I think if this is a problem the chief should consider forming a special unit to deal with this situation. We really should fault a lone officer for not taking his life in his hand to deal with a "nuisance" call.
If you are looking for fault here, Where are the parents of these kids?
DUH!
