Dear Mr. Deere (John?),

I don't really believe anybody is actually joking about things. Especially Sue Ellen (Mrs. Ewing) feeling that she's about to be forced into leavimg her home. It's just the freestyle way of the good folks here. Believe me, it honestly makes me worry. She could be any one of us.

Now I do agree that the saddest part is when a citizen feels, with good cause mind you, that the government is lame, can't be trusted and that the citizens should take over. But I'm just old enough to remember when just that very thing happened. About 50 years ago. It was so successful that Newburgh got the "All American City" award (1952 if memory serves). The city had its own tax on things but that didn't help. The Home Relief payouts were the biggest cut of the budget. Newburgh was about to be washed away. A committee of citizens managed to find outside resources and got them in here to clean house. Even the books and budget. Next thing, "All American"!

But back then Newburgh had business, stores, eateries, movie houses, bowling alley, roller rink and watering holes.

We need to get that back so we can stop the riding on the backs of so few taxpayers to keep the place going. Then we can move along.

Now how can we attract businesses? Our government won't. So how about some suggestions here? And let's not be shy. The only stupid suggestion is the one you don't make.

As its been suggested elsewhere, the ARC has to be redone. Building owners have to be made to maintain respectable properties. In NYC the mayor has managed to charge and collect fines on even the silliest things. Maybe we should try that here. Trash on your sidewalk after a certain hour in the morning. Allowing loittering in front of your store. Loud speakers in windows. Impose AND COLLECT fines for "Quality of Life" infractions.

There. The list is started.

Meantime, you keep your hopes up Mrs. Ewing!
