Subject: An association-in-fact

If a forum is opened for the sake of letting people share their opinions on a variety of issues that impact their lives in any way, shouldn't that forum be available to all? If the forum is only for a particular group, passwords and other restrictions are available to maintain privacy.

Everybody has an opinion about something. And that's precisely what that is: opinion. But a statement claimed to be fact must be substantiated.

Blogs, forums, boards, even wikis contain a degree of misinformation and opinion. A point of view depends on where you're standing.

If a forum is opened and all are invited to participate with the understanding that opinions will be voiced, maturity dictates that eventually a conflicting opinion is bound to appear at some point in time. When that happens, is it right to silence, delete, block, remove, prohibit the one who opines?

I happen to like this board because it's terms of use forewarn that statements need to be backed up when required. That's not prohibitive. It's good sense and courtesy. It gives credibility to what's posted. And it implies that statements made are otherwise opinion.

If I say "people are the media" and I don't say "some people are the media", do I imply that "all people are the media"? If I want only "some people" to participate, shouldn't I use available restrictions up front to limit participation to "some people"? If I don't use those restrictions it makes me wonder what I'm trying to hide, why I'm hiding and where my credibility is.

In the jargon of the internet, let's just call this post a "rant", my opinion, from my point of view and not the voice of an "association-in-fact". But it's open to opinion.
