Even NPR is all abuzz reporting on how cyber media was so instrumental in changing the Tunisian government and way of life. With Facebook, Twitter and blogs the Tunisians over-turned their government. They weren't allowed to speak in public. They couldn't tell their government about their displeasure. But they couldn't be silenced in cyber space. So they used what they had. They blogged and Twittered and peacefully won!

We Newburghers have a government that tells us it doesn't want to hear us. We have a forum board that selectively deletes & blocks our opinions. Then we have this board where we're actually invited to post. It even has a Twitter partner! And we had both before Tunis had them! If that ain't progressive I don't know what is. It shows that there's still some thinking going on here. Newburgh had the social media edge before it hit global news.

What I don't understand is that only a few Newburghers are savy enough to use all of this to bring on the changes that Tunis was bright enough to do. It makes me wonder what's really wrong with my fellow Newburghers. It makes me believe that Newburghers really are happy with the way things are and that they or we really want things the way they are. That's scary.

But if Tunis can change life on line I can hope Newburgh will when our government tells us to shut up, pack up and leave. This is our public address platform. And we don't even have to leave home to have our say. And we aren't told to shut up here, deleted or blocked. And unlike the news papers or call in talk shows we're not edited out.

Silence in this case = Approval of the status quo.
